Oil immersed transformers utilize oil both as the primary insulation method and the cooling medium. Various cooling techniques include oil immersed self-cooling, oil immersed air-cooling, oil immersed water-cooling, and forced oil circulation. Essential components encompass the iron core, winding, oil tank, oil pillow, respirator, explosion-proof tube (pressure relief valve), radiator, insulation sleeve, tap changer, gas relay, thermometer, oil purifier, and more.
Between the silicon steel sheets in oil immersed transformers, long-term immersion allows oil penetration, granting the transformer oil elasticity and a buffering effect, resulting in low noise levels. However, the pressure regulating switch inside the tank remains invisible from the outside during pressure regulation. Poor contact during regulation can lead to circuit breaker equivalence, and high loads may burn out a poorly contacted switch.
Operating temperature: These transformers can operate as specified on the nameplate under suitable cooling conditions, with the top oil temperature not exceeding 90 ºC. To prevent insulation aging, it is recommended that the top oil temperature should generally stay below 85 ºC, with an alarm set at 80 ºC to ensure timely interventions.
Overload: Transformers are designed to handle both normal and accidental overloads, with overload signals as a vital feature. If signals are unavailable, comprehensive measuring instruments must be used. For oil immersed transformers, the overload signal should be set at 1.1-1.2 times the rated current, while for dry-type transformers, it should be 1.2-1.3 times the rated current (considering fan current when running).
Once the overload signal activates, careful monitoring of load and temperature changes is crucial. If feasible, promptly investigate the cause of the overload. For high overloads (over 1.3 times the rated current) or temperatures exceeding the upper limit, the load must be reduced. Monthly data downloads from comprehensive side instruments are recommended for analysis. Shorten the data download cycle for transformers showing overload tendencies, and closely monitor load and temperature. Prompt inspections and checks are essential to mitigate overload causes and prevent damage due to excessive load or temperature.
