Oil-immersed transformers utilize oil as their principal insulation medium and cooling mechanism. This design encompasses various cooling methods such as self-cooling, air-cooling, water-cooling, and forced oil circulation. The key components of an oil-immersed transformer include the iron core, windings, oil tank, conservator, breather, explosion-proof tube (pressure relief valve), radiator, insulation bushings, tap changer, gas relay, thermometer, and oil purifier.
The silicon steel sheets within oil-immersed transformers are immersed in oil for extended periods, allowing the oil to permeate, providing elasticity and buffering, which significantly reduces operational noise. However, the on-load tap changer is located inside the oil tank, making its contact status invisible from the outside. Poor contact can lead to circuit breaker-like disruptions or the burning of the switch under high load conditions.
Operating Temperature: Oil-immersed transformers are designed to function optimally under specified cooling conditions as indicated on the nameplate. The top oil temperature should not surpass 90ºC. To prevent insulation aging, frequent top oil temperatures should remain below 85ºC, with alarm settings at 80ºC for additional safety.
Overload Management: Transformers can manage both normal and emergency overload conditions. It's crucial to install overload signaling devices or utilize comprehensive measuring instruments. For oil-immersed transformers, the overload signal should be between 1.1-1.2 times the rated current, while for dry-type transformers, it should range from 1.2-1.3 times the rated current (considering fan operation).
Post Overload Protocol: Upon activation of the overload signal, monitor load and temperature variations. If feasible, promptly investigate and address the cause of the overload. Should the overload exceed 1.3 times the rated current or if temperatures rise beyond safe limits, immediate load reduction is necessary. Regular data downloads and load analyses are recommended, especially for transformers prone to overload, with more frequent inspections based on usage patterns.
